The Myth of Failing Single Parents

Raising a child as in a one-parent family is, indeed, challenging. Several decades ago, the status of a single mother or a father had a lot of stigma around it. People had no social indulgence towards those parents who chose to be alone. Moreover, the children in one-parent families were often deprived of their natural rights because they were seen different and sometimes even failed. However, as of today, single parents proudly call themselves independent, refute prejudices and remove the labels put on them earlier.

The first and most common myth is that single parents are not able to give their children enough attention and care. A single parent needs to support his or her child the same way as usual families with two parents do. They usually work a lot and, as a result, are considered to be distant from their kids because of being constantly busy. Yet, the presence of both parents when raising a child is a very unreliable guarantee of one’s happy childhood. Single parents do not spend much time with their significant others to maintain a harmonious relationship, thus they have more time to spend with their children.

The second myth is that children who are lacking an example of masculine or feminine behavior pattern are missing out on their gender development. It is surely true that children need a role model. However, the idea of a role model is not gender-specific. Apart from a parent himself or herself, children might as well find a role model among grandparents, siblings, older friends, teachers, etc.

Last, but definitely not least, there is a myth going around that children of single parents do bad in school and have behavioral problems. Statistics reports show that, according to surveys, children from single-parent families do a better job of learning and adapting socially than those who have to grow up in an environment of misunderstandings between their parents. Last ones are usually dealing with a constant internal struggle. The divorce of parents in such a situation can be a way to reduce psychological stress on children’s shoulders and, as a result, to improve their academic performance and behavior in general.

Thus, an idea of a single parent is often full of outdated stereotypes. As of today, a parent with no partner has all the means to raise his or her children and to create optimal conditions for their development.
