The history of fitness testing

Fitness testing is a complex of various procedures aimed at determining muscle strength, stamina, flexibility, body composition and cardiorespiratory endurance. These data allow developing the optimal efficiency and security of the personal training program. Now it is an important procedure for anyone who wants to play sports. You would ask what the procedure of the testing is like. Who developed the testing methods used in today sport? To find out it is necessary to consider the origins of testing methods.

Exercise physiology as a science emerged in the late 19th century. Unfortunately, there are a few recorded facts and observations on the progress in the fitness testing at that time. However, we can learn about the scientists who were pioneers in the history of the sports physiology development and the testing methods they developed.

Leg power tests have been developed by Carmelo Bosco. Robert A. Bruce has created a treadmill test for diagnosing and evaluating cardiac and respiratory diseases. Also, we know Chester Step Test, the yo-yo tests, Åstrand-Rhyming Cycle Test, and the test of Kenneth Cooper.

Kenneth Cooper is a famous American doctor known as a founder of aerobics. In addition, athletes, coaches and sports doctors widely use the Cooper test to evaluate the exercise tolerance, as well as the functional state of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The main advantage of the Cooper test is the convenience and ease of use without restrictions by age, despite Cooper believes that his tests are not good or forbidden to be carried out on people over 35 years. When performing these tests more than 2/3 of the muscle mass of an athlete is involved. Plus the main high-impact exercise is performed through the use of the body's oxygen supply.

The most popular test of Cooper is a cross-country workout for 12 minutes. Given exactly 12 minutes you need to overcome the greatest possible distance during this time. There are more comprehensive tests of Cooper, which today test even commandos. A testee needs to perform 4 cycles of exercises which include pushups, turns, crunches, jumping and so on. To obtain a great result you need to finish within three minutes. The satisfactory result is if you have spent 4 minutes on the test.

It is worth noting that testing not only helps in the beginning but with time allows to objectively assess the results of training and to make adjustments to the training programme. Fitness testing is necessary for professional athletes and people who are regularly engaged in fitness or just going to start training.
