Making of Roger Rabbit

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a comedy feature film released in 1988 by the companies Touchstone Pictures and Amblin Entertainment. The movie is a winner of four Oscar awards.

The movie is remarkable by the fact that the whole film contains drawn animation combined with play of actors. The plot of the film is set in 1947 in the fictional Los Angeles, where cartoon characters (referred to as toons) are as real as people. Mainly, toons live in the Los Angeles area, called Toontown, which is a likeness of the ethnic population of one national group (similar to Chinatown, populated by immigrants from China). Most toons work as cartoon actors; others earn money by doing regular activities similar for people including illegal.

The film’s budget was $70 million. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was one of the most expensive films released at the time, but the costs ultimately were covered by the box office that accumulated more than $150 million in US theaters. The movie provides a unique opportunity to see animated characters from different studios involved together in one film.

Scenes played by live actors were directed by Robert Zemeckis. They were mostly shot on film studio Borehamwood in Hertfordshire, England. Cartoon material was directed by Richard Williams and shot on his animation studio in London.

The plot was based on the novel of 1981, Who Censored Roger Rabbit? by Gary Wolfe. It was adapted by writers Jeffrey Price and Peter Siman.

The film was released in rental by Buena Vista Distribution with the support of the branch Touchstone Pictures. In the United States, the movies was rated PG by the MPAA.

The music for the film was written by the composer Alan Silvestri. The compositions were performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Silvestri; Jessica’s musical themes were completely improvised by the Orchestra.

The movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit opened a new era in American animation. With the wide spread of animation on television since the 1960s, this area was slowly degrading to the level of so-called Saturday morning shows (low-budget TV cartoons). Even the animation giants like Walt Disney Company saw no prospects of animation production as the main direction of activity. This expensive movie was a very risky move for the company, and the risk was acquitted after an excellent return on investment. After Roger Rabbit, the interest in the history of animation renewed as well as in people-legends in this field, such as Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Touchstone, and Disney in an attempt to restore the practice of short animation films.
