American Revolution Period

The American Revolution is the period of the political events in the British colonies of North America in the years 1765-1783, which resulted in the formation of the United States. Revolution was caused by the reluctance of the colonies to obey the interests of the monopoly.

American Revolution began as a national liberation movement that grew into a war for independence, but as events were unfolding it started to have social contradictions; as a result of the growing split in American society, the war for independence became a civil war. The most vivid expression of this rift was found in the movement of loyalists, who have sided with the British crown, openly opposing the insurgent people.

American Revolution had left intact the slaveholding South, a system that for 80 years after the end of the Revolutionary War hindered the development of American capitalism. Revolution slightly affected property relations established during the colonial period, eliminating only the vestiges of feudalism in agrarian relations. However, one cannot deny the great achievements of Revolution – the conquest of independence and establishment of a united federal republic, constitutional and legal institutionalization of bourgeois-democratic rights and freedoms.

On September 5, 1774 the first Continental Congress gathered in Philadelphia, where all colonies were represented, except Georgia. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and other prominent figures, which played an important role in the American Revolution, were among the delegates of the Congress. Congress passed a decision that inevitably led to a break with the British monopoly, boycotting the import of British goods and export from the colonies.

In April 1775, the battle of Lexington happened, marking the beginning of the national liberation war. On the Second Continental Congress a declaration of reasons to take the arms was adopted, making George Washington a commander in chief.

Virginia Declaration of Rights had a huge influence on the course of the revolutionary events and the political and legal consciousness of the colonists. This declaration is one of the most important documents in the history of American constitutionalism. The Declaration proclaimed that all power resides in the people and is derived from the people, and the rulers are the trusted servants of the people and are responsible to them.

The Declaration of Independence of 1776 played an outstanding role in the development of American democracy and constitutionalism. This document, written by Thomas Jefferson and adopted by the Third Continental Congress had a revolutionary character.

The American Revolution is the period of the political events in the British colonies of North America in the years 1765-1783, which resulted in the formation of the United States. Revolution was caused by the reluctance of the colonies to obey the interests of the monopoly.
