Two Party Political System

Two party political system in the USA is a question, which has been attracting the attention of researchers for many years. The American Party system is one of the oldest parties in the world, along with the English one. It operates as a system in comparison with other countries. It is one of the most stable party systems, which has a long history of more than two hundred years. During all this time, despite the changes that have occurred with the two-party system, it still exists.

In the process of elaboration and adoption of the Constitution of the United States the first political groups were formed. They were created around individual leaders, who offered alternative views on domestic and foreign policy of the USA. In this regard the so-called party caucuses originated in Congress. Around Alexander Hamilton there was a caucus of Federalists, strong supporters of the federal government; and Thomas Jefferson the so-called united Antifederalists (or Republicans) were formed, who defended the states' rights. Ideologically, they differed as no other party before in the history of the US: the first party advocated the aristocratic republic, while the latter one was in favor of a democratic republic.

For a quarter-century after the end of the Anglo-American War in 1812, national parties of mass type were finally formed in the United States. This occurred during the operation of the new two-party bundles Whigs and Democrats. These parties have fought with each other not only for the president post, but also for other posts. At the same time the state party organizations acquired more professional characteristics, which are preserved in the US two-party system to date.

Whigs and Democrats lasted less than two decades, but the foundations that were laid in this period in the American party system development acted not only the whole 19th century, but continue to exist until now. At that time, a two-party system formed as a competition of two US mass parties, but at the same time third party began to appear.

American Civil War led to the disappearance of the Whigs and the split in the Democratic ranks. The Republican Party was formed on this basis of this. Only by the end of the reconstruction of the US South, the party situation in the country stabilized.

On the other hand, the American Civil War only strengthened the confidence of Americans in need of existence of two-party system, which did not destroy constitutional foundations, but instead strengthened them.

3.75 stars. Had this been on time I would have given it at least a 4/5. The paper was good, and I only had to do a few things and add some extra information and sources.
