Symbolism and Plot of Farewell to Arms Story

Ernest Hemingway wrote "A Farewell to Arms" 1929. The major theme of the novel was a love story between Lieutenant Henry and Nurse Catherine. The First World War is a backcloth of the story.

Often the novel "A Farewell to Arms" considered purely autobiographical. However, the action of the novel takes place in 1915 - 1917 years, but the writer arrived in Italy in 1918, after Caporetto and was considerably west of Lieutenant Henry. Of course, Hemingway believed that military experience is important to convey the spirit, the atmosphere of what is happening, but it is not necessary to be present in the particular battles.

Italian-Austrian front. American Frederick Henry - Lieutenant sanitary troops of the Italian Army (Italian - because the US has not yet entered the war, and Henry went to volunteer). Before the battle everything is calm. Officers spend their time as best as they only can. Some drink, others play billiards, go to a public house and discuss with chaplain various intimate things. Henry's life changes when Catherine appears. Henry says he exist in order to fight, and to eat and sleep with Catherine. He doesn't intend to part with her. He concluded a separate peace. War is over for him.

A romantic story line lacks a conflict. Nobody can prevent Henry and Katherine enjoy their life together. Heroes never fall into despair and always find a way out of the impasse. Only their natural life and some circumstances can cause difficulty for lovers. Nevertheless, they still easy overcome them. Kathryn’s feelings to Henry are sacrificial. The girl need only love from her husband. The rest does not interest her. She is happy with him. Henry supports her fully. Lovers are not interested in the company of other people. They find consolation only in each other (they are so good to feel for each other, even fall asleep and wake up together).

Childbirth is approaching, but there is a problem. Catherin's pelvis is too narrow. Almost all the time Henry and Catherine spend together. They had no need for communication. Catherine is about to give birth, but generic activities are very weak and she was doing a caesarian section, but it is too late. The exhausted child is born dead, dying itself Catherine too. Devastated Henry thinks that everything always ends by the death. You were born and figured out the rules and in the first time when they catch you unawares, they kill you. No one can hide from neither life nor death.
