Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a play by an American playwright Edward Albee, first staged on Broadway in 1962.

The name of the play is an allusion to the song about three pigs Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? from the classic animated cartoon by Disney studios, with the replacement of Big Bad Wolf for the writer Virginia Woolf. Albee said in an interview that once he saw the inscription Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? on the mirror in the bar, and remembered it, when writing the play.

A play is in three acts, each with the subtitle: Fun and Games; Walpurgisnacht; Exorcism.

The play has only four characters, a married couple George and Martha, and Nick and Honey. All the events take place in the living room of George and Martha’s house.

The plot of the play tells about a young couple, a new college professor Nick and his wife, who come late at night on a visit to the daughter of a college president, Martha and her husband. Everyone is a bit drunk, because that evening there was a party, where they met. George and Martha constantly brawl with each other and draw their guests in this game. It becomes clear that their family life is a never-ending war. In a conversation with Nick’s wife Martha mentions her son, although George for as yet unknown reason tried to ban raising this issue. After running out of all the ways to irritate George, Martha almost in front of him cheats on him with Nick. In retaliation, George tells Martha that their son had died; Martha very strangely reacts to this news and reproaches George that he had no right to deal with such issues alone. Nick realizes that actually there are no children – they were simply playing the next game and Martha broke the rules. Early in the morning, shocked guests leave the house of George and Martha. The home team remains in the likeness of truce.

The play by Edward Albee immediately after the publication in the early 60s of the last century has attracted attention. It saw a continuation of the theme of the eternal confrontation between men and women, and the critics were looking for reflections of American archetypes in the characters of the play. On the stage, the play became a discovery, because it showed those aspects of life that were not accepted to speak so frankly and boldly.
