Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen

Young men were aged, dying and broken. He emphases the disillusion of the heroic deaths by describing a gas attack and a soldier drowning from it. He addresses the reader and disagrees with the attitude of the war that is commonly accepted in England. He says about the age the men are dying by referring to them as children, who seek fame, this makes you think that the soldiers do not know what they are getting themselves into. He accuses the government of lying. He wrote “the old lie” Dulce et decorum est pro partial more. This translates from Latin to read it is sweet and honorable to die for your country. He disagrees with this statement because many of the dead died in pain and suffering.

W. Owen commonly uses the phrase “bent double”, which is an example of hyperbole. This phrase hides the unspeakable pain of any soldier who stands daily suffering. They feel exhausted by the ordeal. The author in his poem hints that the soldiers were "like a drunk," they were not entirely in control of what they were doing. They do not perceive the situation clearly, fighters feel awkward and confused.

Alliteration is used a bit. Using alliteration adds to the tone of the poem. Owen is saying a point and getting you to remember it. He makes his point so that it is impossible to turn away. “GAS! Quick, boys” – these words convey chaos and disorder, which operates on the battlefield. Soldiers feel confused and scared. We feel all this horror, which is happening with soldiers.

There is an effective simile at the start of the poem. The soldiers are compared to old crippled ugly hags: “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks”, “Knock-kneed is coughing like hags”. It's like an allusion to the fact that these guys are still very young and immature, and obviously not ready to die. He wants us to feel angry about the waste of lives that have only just begun. The author wants to show how he is angry because so many people vain lose the most valuable thing they have - their life.

All soldiers are being led to death like animals. Owen shows that people are treated like animals. Soldiers in the war are nothing more than a creature that only takes orders. Therefore, the author incredibly well conveys the horrors of war in his poem. It seems that you are actually in that hell. After reading these poems, we all understand the fear that soldiers going through during the war.
