Famous Book of Post-War Years

The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding is one of the most famous books of post-war years. This is one of the most famous novels by Golding. By genre the novel is close to dystopia.

The novel tells the story of how a group of civilized teens, caught by chance on a desert island, degenerates to a state of primitive savagery.

Golding’s plot is much more complicated, because the text has an allegorical dimension, which was not in prehistory. Such turn in rethinking of the famous story is largely due to the moral crisis caused by the Second World War, during which, according to Golding, people received a horrible, hopeless knowledge of what human beings are capable of. No wonder the time period in the novel refers to a hypothetical future, to the consequences of a nuclear war. In the process of survival, children use the learned standards of behavior in the construction of their small community. They elect a leader and find a place to discuss their affairs. But the ideals embodied by education, disappear from the boys; minds with frightening ease. At the same time, in the children’s souls irrational fears are reborn that are about imaginary monsters, darkness that reigns on the island, the unknown, which shrouds the future of boys. All this happens in the face of horror, sin, and evil that leads to the knowledge that, as one of the characters said is defined as the end of innocence and the onset of darkness of the human heart.

Metaphorical idea is characteristic for Golding. It is present in the context of the Lord of the Flies that something terrible is constantly monitoring people from the jungle. This embodies the deep observations of the author on the unconscious in a man. Wild and devastating start, according to the writer, is both a legacy of ancestors, and an acquired gift of civilization.

The name of the book Lord of the Flies in Hebrew means the name of the devil – Beelzebub.

Each character is assigned with a symbolic image.

There is a beast and a potential killer in every man from birth. Ordinary British boy becomes cruel and ruthless under the influence of circumstances, a merciless animal aroused by the sight of blood and able to kill the companion.

The situation developed by Golding has two semantic plans: things that happen with the boys on a remote island should at the same time allegorically represent the fate of mankind. Savage being in a man never dies; it is constrained by civilization; it is hidden nearby and extends outwardly in all circumstances favorable to this.

A monster invented by kids is the personification of the start of the bloody animal in humans.
