The Aim of Christian Education

The word education originally meant participation in the creation of a God’s image in a man, its restoration according to the likeness of God. One with the help of God creates oneself in the image and likeness of God. The aim of a mentor, confessor, or teacher is to help a student in this act.

Unfortunately, in our time, the word education has lost its original meaning. It became known as the acquisition of knowledge and skills under the guidance of teachers and educators that are useful for material well-being and career. Education loses self-sufficient value and is increasingly becoming a means of achieving those or other selfish needs. Therefore, it does not protect from rising crime and lawlessness.

Principles of Christian education are Christocentric (which determine the relation to God), ecclesiologic principle (which determines the attitude to the Church), pedocentric (which determines the attitude to the child), and moral and pedagogical asceticism (which determines the attitude of the teacher to oneself and professional activity).

The main aim of the Christian education is disclosure of those gifts of God, which can contribute to the disclosure of the image of God in a man.

A characteristic of a student should have an ability to learn. The learning process should invoke a change in a student. Student at the start comes in the status of a ‘baby’ with not enough academic knowledge and practical skills. Christian education forms a system of values and a world view. In order to have an effective training a student should be ready to accept new ideas.

In the center of Christian education is the goal of God for every Christian – to bring a person to a spiritual maturity and likeness of Christ.

The purpose of Christian education determines the course of the educational process. To make the training effective so it could contribute to the perfection of a student it is necessary to properly plan a learning program. It must be based on the principles of authority, adequacy, infallibility of the Scriptures, and reflect a Christian worldview. It also should contain the theoretical courses and practical courses in theology and include mentoring elements, i.e. the teaching method should not be limited to lectures. It is advisable to supplement lessons with workshops, individual consultations, and even pastoral work.

The ratio of lectures, practical, and individual classes varies in each school, depending on the requirements of a particular accredited organization.
