The Daily Life of Civil War Soldiers

American Civil War was the civil war of 1861-1865 between the compound 20 non-slave states and four slave states of the North with 11 slave states of the South.

The fighting began with the bombardment of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 and resulted in the delivery of the Confederate Army rests under General Stand Watie on June 23, 1865. During the war, there were about 2,000 of small and large battles. In this war, a lot of the US citizens were killed, more than in any other of the wars the United States participated.

Those who think that war is a series of continuous bloody battles are deeply mistaken. If the really was like that few would have survived it to the end, and even if survived, they would unlikely to be at the same sane. The human psyche simply cannot be in a state of stress, and every battle is a lot of stress. Fortunately, even during the bloodiest wars major battles are a not frequent phenomenon, and the Civil War in the United States is no exception. For example, according to the calculations by American historians, by July 1863, when there was a battle at Gettysburg, even those of the soldiers of the army of the Potomac, who participated in all previous battles, in total had participated in just 20 battles for two years of the war.

Thus, a soldier in the war had to spend most of the time not on the front line and not even in the campaign, but in the camp, or at the post. Such a daily life full of routine also posed a risk to the mental health of a soldier: soldiers simply risked simply to go mad from boredom, if they didn’t have a diversified pastime.

Civil war soldiers had many activities during their leisure. One of the first activities was sports team games, particularly baseball. By the beginning of the Civil War, baseball had just appeared in the United States, and according to the legend its invention was attributed to one of the heroes of the North, General Abner Doubleday. Both armies held their championships.

In winter, when the fields and hills of Virginia and Maryland were covered with deep snow, baseball gave way to another popular pastime – playing snowballs. Entertainment of soldiers during breaks in the fighting, of course, did not accrue only to active games. Among other pleasures, not the last place was occupied by poker that always attracted many gamblers. Often soldiers would sit all night at the card table, winning and losing the entire state.

Lovers of fine arts were fond of theatrical productions. Almost every shelf had its own troupe that staged performances several times a week. However, the most important was the music to Civil war soldiers.
