Importance of Automobile to Our Environment

Cars have become an integral part of modern life. Traffic jams that can last for many hours are a proof of that. Today, the car is the most common type of vehicle. With each passing day the number of cars is growing, and manufacturers try to implement new technologies that make the familiar car a smart gadget that is able to think and act independently in a given situation.

Our life without a car cannot be imagined, because there are commonly known benefits that cars provide both to a society as a whole, and the individual car owner.

Despite all the conveniences the cars bring into our lives, there are also a lot of disadvantages. Continued growth in the number of vehicles has a definite negative impact on the environment and human health. Millions of car engines pollute and poison the atmosphere with the exhaust gases, especially in large cities, where the traffic is very intense. The noise of the engines and the vehicle has an irritating effect on the nervous system of people; it prevents them from work and relaxation. When a car moves at a high speed it presents a risk to human life. All these negative effects of cars on people and the environment cannot be completely ruled out, but they can be greatly reduced.

During the work of the automotive engine, gases are emitted into the atmosphere, containing about 60 different compounds, including toxic materials: carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, aldehydes, carbon black, etc., and when using leaded gasoline – the lead compounds are emitted in the environment. Reduction of pollutant emissions is achieved by a series of positive measures: selection of operating modes and adjust the fuel equipment, maintenance and repair, as well as special measures (filtration and neutralization of exhaust gases). In order to reduce pollution of the atmosphere the existing internal combustion engines are being improved. New types of engines are being developed. Scientists study the possibility of replacing internal combustion engines with other types of power plants.

The main source of noise in cities is automobile transport. Noise is generated mainly from the release into the atmosphere of exhaust gases from the engine and the interaction of tires with the road.

Automobiles are also a major consumer of petroleum products. Petroleum products, a variety of acid and alkali, are used for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles. They get into sewage and poison freshwater and oceans. Water pollution not only makes water unsuitable for use, but also cause irreparable damage to the entire natural environment, with which it comes into contact.
