The Ancient Greek Worship Essay

When it comes to ancient Greeks, they worshiped a number of gods, and each one has a unique domain and personality. If you’re interested in this subject, you should focus on Greek myths because they explain the main origins of all gods, their relations with people, and so on. There are different mythological episodes that you may want to read, including the established iconography where you can find the identity of every Greek god.

It’s advisable to get a better idea of the Greek pantheon that included 12 basic deities. Zeus is the most important one because he is the father of other gods and the god of the sky. He has 2 brothers, Poseidon and Hades, who rule the sea and underworld. Hera is his spouse and sister while being the queen of other gods. Athens was supported by Athena, a god of wisdom, while young Apollo is a god of prophecy and music. It’s worth mentioning that he was one of the main gods in ancient Greece in the past according to the number of his cult sites. For example, his basic sanctuary is at Delphi, a place that was called the center of the whole universe.

Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo and she patrons hunting, while Hermes is a messenger god. Besides, there are other important gods who should be mentioned, including Dionysus, Aphrodite, Ares, and more. Don’t forget that ancient Greeks thought that the Mount Olympus was the home for all gods.

Another interesting fact is that ancient Greek religious practices were quite conservative in their nature. They were based on long-term and honored observances, but there is no guiding work or scripture, such as the Bible or the Torah. It’s incredible that all the relationships between people and ancient gods were based on the exchange concept. This means that ancient Greek gods always expected for gifts from people so that all kinds of votive offerings left on sanctuaries serves as their physical expressions of thanks.

In addition, ancient Greeks worshipped their gods in many sanctuaries placed both in the countryside and in the city. They were well-defined and sacred places protected from the rest of the world by enclosure walls. There was a special temple with monumental cult images, alters, statues, etc. Keep in mind that many temples actually benefited from different natural surroundings, and this is what helped them express the characters of specific gods. There are many other prominent facts that surround the gods to whom ancient Greeks worshiped.
