Nowadays the media have a great psychological impact on the consciousness and personality of the human. The role of the media is related to their influence on various stages and sides of the information process in society. The flow of information in the modern world is so diverse and contradictory that neither the individual nor even a group of experts is able to sort all things out, therefore, the effect of the media is rather strong.
Media of today is a powerful factor of influence on the psychological and social condition of the people. The aspects of the media influence are numerous and have both positive and negative effects on the personality. Human society is much concerned about the adverse impact of the media especially when it comes to young people. In the process of persuasion, the media aims to establish a strong, sustainable relationship to the phenomenon. The mission of the media to impress on any society is considered as inhumane, since people cannot control directional influence and, so, are powerless at the suggestion.
Propaganda is one of the most efficient ways to manipulate public consciousness. Media also use a method of disinformation, which affects making important decisions. As this method is quite rough, they prefer a more impactful and implicit one which is a method of association. It involves a special arrangement of concepts that cause either a positive or negative association to influence the perception of information and in consequence develop stereotypes. Stereotypes efficiently regulate the whole process of perception. The task of the media is to adjust the information under the stereotype. The formation of stereotypical thinking is the main task of those who want to control the minds of people because such people perceive the information implicitly, without internal struggle and critical analysis. To consolidate the formation of stereotypical thinking, they use the method of repetition.
The negative effect of the media on the psychological state is considerably reinforced when a person is tired or depressed. If a man is dissatisfied with the work, himself or others, due to the influence of radio, TV or the Internet, his bad condition can go from bad to worse. Finally, he becomes more amenable and easy to control.
In the contemporary world, it is impossible to refuse the media so one of the ways to limit their negative impact is to develop critical thinking and be more selective in the sources of information.
