King Henry IV, Part II, Monologue

If you’re interested in getting familiar with Henry IV, Part II, the first thing that you should understand that this literary work was written by William Shakespeare, one of the most talented and famous writers in the world. Pay attention to a short monologue extracted from this play, as this is where King Henry concentrates on his grief over the inability to sleep well at night.

Basically, the author succeeds to incorporate the best descriptive imagery with syntax and diction, and this is what allows him to convey the exact state of mind of King Henry, the main character of this well-known play. This soliloquy started with his words that he suffers from bad insomnia, and that’s why he can’t sleep at all at night. It’s no wonder the mood of this character is quite gloomy and miserable.

The next thing that you will read in this short monologue is that King Henry compares good sleep with a soft nurse. This is how William Shakespeare personifies sleeping patterns, thus creating quite a distinct image of its significance and power to this character. Besides, King Henry keeps complaining that his sleep is bad only because the nurse of the nature didn’t charmed him into sleeping.

It’s obvious that he is completely unable to sleep, and that’s why King Henry complaints that even the poorest and worst person can sleep at night under appalling conditions while he can’t do the same thing living in a great palace that has the necessary appliances and a high level of comfort, but he can’t even close the eyes there. Pay attention to the extended apostrophes used by William Shakespeare because they address sleeping because he can’t understand why a powerful person can’t sleep and rest well at night while others can. You will be surprised to read that King Henry even argues with his sleep in this short and famous monologue.

In the beginning of this play, this character seems to be pre-occupied with establishing his moral legitimacy to a throne. Make sure that you can make valuable conclusions when characterizing King Henry according to this monologue and other parts of this play. Finally, William Shakespeare seems to set up humanity versus authority in this literary work. There are many powerful and original literacy devices and tools used in it, and they all are worth your attention, especially when it comes to the monologue of King Henry who has huge problems with his night sleeping for obvious reasons.
