Edgar Allan Poe is a famous American poet, novelist, critic, and journalist. He is considered the founder of a new for his time literary genre of detective stories. Poe’s innovative literature gave to the world the genre of science fiction. Many generations of poets and poetry lovers were fascinated by the magic of his verse. He was a man of brilliant talent and a sad fate that left an imprint on his works.
His poems and some stories are full of allegories, the decadence, dark and oppressive atmosphere, the nervous tension and the terror of death. True masterpieces of Poe’s literary talent are The Fall Of The House Of Usher, The Masque Of The Red Death, the Gold-Bug, The Murders In The Rue Morgue, the Black Сat, the Mystery of Marie Roget, William Wilson, The Purloined Letter, and many others. His poem "The Raven", first published in 1845, is indicated in a separate line in his lyrics and is still haunting the minds of creative individuals around the world.
As the novelist, Poe seriously declared himself with a story Manuscript Found In A Bottle (1833), that received the award at the competition "Saturday courier." The stories " A Descent into the Maelström " (1841) and "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket " (1838) are written in the tradition of extraordinary voyages. To the "marine" works we can add the adventure stories on land and in the air: "Diary of Julius Rodmena" ( 1840) — a fantastic description of the first trip across the Rocky mountains of North America committed by civilized people; " The Unparalleled Adventures of One Hans Pfaall " ( 1835), which begin in a playfully satirical vein, and pass in a documentary report about lunar flight; "The Balloon-Hoax" ( 1844) telling about the alleged flight across the Atlantic. These works are not just stories of unimaginable adventure, but an adventure of imagination, the allegory of a permanent dramatic journey into the unknown, in the other, beyond everyday empirical experience, emotional and psychological dimensions. This genre of literature was later called science fiction.
In addition to the three basic types of stories: fantasy-adventure, Gothic and logical, Poe wrote in many other genre versions: humorous sketches, satirical sketches, parodies and parables.
Haters and admirers, imitators and followers — all of them are haunted by the legacy of Edgar Poe for more than a century. His influence as a writer and poet on the world literature is enormous.
