What Provoked World War I

In the summer of 1914 broke out the imperialistic war, participated by 36 states. It was the First World War, covering 75% of the total population of the globe. The war brought infinite sufferings and disaster to the peoples of the world, having taken millions of human lives.

The outbreak of military activities was provoked by appalling events in Sarajevo. In June 1914 a Serbian student from the national terrorist organisation "Black hand," Gavrilo Princip shot the heir to the Austrian throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, who arrived in Sarajevo for manoeuvres of the Austrian troops. In this way, Serbia claimed Bosnia, which at that time was a part of Austria-Hungary. For Germany and Austria-Hungary, it was a perfect excuse to attack Serbia and strengthen their positions in the Balkans. However, first Austria-Hungary delivered Serbia an ultimatum that had 10 points. Despite the fact that Serbia agreed to discharge all obligations except one, on July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war against Serbia and immediately began hostilities by firing Serbian capital Belgrade.

As Russia supported Serbia, the next day Nicholas II signed a decree of General mobilisation. Almost immediately he received a telegram from Wilhelm II. Kaiser assured the king that Germany would make every effort to reassure the Austrians. Nicholas cancelled his decree, however, soon changed his mind due to the forceful argument of S. Sazonov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. As soon as Russia announced a General mobilisation on July 30, Germany called to the colours in response, simultaneously demanding that Russia within 12 hours cancelled preparations for war. Having received a resolute refusal, Germany declared war on Russia. It is true to form that the Germans had previously reported about their intention to France, insisting on respect for its neutrality. Being bound by a treaty with Russia, France refused and also announced the mobilisation. On 3 August France and Belgium were proclaimed a war by Germany. The next day England, hesitating tough, unsheathed the sword against Germany. Thus, the Sarajevo assassination led to the world war which soon involved 34 states.

The two largest political blocks – the Entente and the Central block (formerly the Triple Alliance participated in the military conflict. The Entente’s participants were the Russian Empire, England and France. The Central block consisted of the following countries: Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy. The latter later joined the Entente. Bulgaria and Turkey entered The Triple Alliance.
