Making a Passive Wine Cellar

Probably every country homeowner would like to have a wine cellar. When making a wine cellar one needs to take into account two main parameters – humidity and temperature. Interestingly, the temperature, among other things, will vary depending on the type of wine stored. Correct insulation helps to observe the correct humidity and temperature.

Experts note that in the wine cellar you need to maintain a constant temperature at the level of 13-15 degrees. If the room is at least a little cooler, the wine maturation will be delayed considerably. On the other hand, if the temperature increases the beverage loses its flavor as well as its inherent characteristics. Collectors also say that different types of wines need to be stored in different locations.

The wine cellar should not be too wet. The optimal level of humidity for the room is 60-70%. At higher levels, the mold begins to form and the wine will be oxidized due to excessive drainage plug.

The room for the wine cellar should be equipped with special equipment and communications.

The main stages in its construction are as follows:

  • Development of individual project, which will take into account the location and size of the cellar, as well as financial possibilities of the owner.
  • Preparatory works: the basement has to be cleaned, treated with special antiseptic compounds that can resist mold.
  • Installation of air conditioners. Air conditioners are selected individually.
  • Interior decoration of a wine cellar, fixation of lamps and suitable insulated doors.
  • Choosing and mounting of racks for bottles.
  • The final finishing, including decorative elements.

Deciding to make a wine cellar, many people completely forget about installation of ventilation and air-conditioning. Connoisseurs of wine recommend to install air conditioning or purchase factory collected refrigerated chambers. But if such a cellar is not well insulated, then a single mechanical or electrical failure could put in danger the entire collection. Others recommend building passive wine cellars, which keep the modest annual temperature oscillation. The purpose in building a passive wine cellar is to reach the constant conditions found at great depth without spending too much, technical complexity, and ground water problems. The northeast corner of the basement is the best place against nature because of where the sun rises and sets.

Passive wine cellar will work in the event of a power failure; such a system does not require maintenance, and provides the necessary conditions for storing wine.
