A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

The novel consists of five parts, which symbolically can be divided into three parts with their own logic. Joyce’s stream of consciousness is different from Proust. It is necessary to take it in the backbone form, which replaced the classic novel. Joyce’s stream of consciousness is diverse, where it is influenced by the gender of the character, age, and other factors.

The three symbolical parts can be named childhood, adolescence, andyouth.

At first, we see Stephen Dedalus as a small child. The flow of the child’s consciousness is built on a naturalistic basis. It is characterized by the interruptions of time with no causal link. We see a transparent world. This is the world, seen for the first time, still surprising and strange. Stephen has specific attitude to the words.

Chapters three and four are about adolescence, which is characterized by the principal complication of world and style. This is the time of search of vocation, when Stephen discovers the sense of his life. The world expands, enriching his inner world. At some point, the character decides to devote himself to God, but after thinking for a while, he refuses to serve the family, country, and church. He decides to devote himself to the creative gift. He becomes an artist. In the end of the novel, Stephen departs from Ireland to Europe. He is the wanderer, homeless hero, and alien.

The fifth chapter is about the youth. Stephen’s consciousness changes again. This part is filled with the endless number of associations and connections. Among the important meaningful points is the character’s name: Stephen (Stefan is a Christian martyr), Daedalus (a mythological character, Icarus’s father).

The author gives his character autobiographical traits, using the material of his own life, describing his years of teaching in the Jesuit colleges Clongowes Wood and Belvedere, as well as in the Catholic University of Dublin. With all the autobiographical features, the image of the character is woven from symbols, mythological and literary.

Satirical picture of reality in the novel is the background against which recreates the inner world of a man, the artist-creator, always lonely, unsatisfied, indulged by everybody. He is the suffering figure, doomed to suffering and sacrifice.

Like many other characters in Ulysses, Stephen Dedalus has its prototype in the Odyssey by Homer. He is Telemachus. That is why the hero constantly thinks about his father and paternity. The image of the character is linked to the theme of father search. However, he is not given to find a spiritual father, which, according to the logic of the plot might be a Bloom. They meet to part forever.
