The Past and Present of East Harlem

East Harlem is Manhattan neighborhood in the northeastern part of Harlem.

East Harlem is home to large communities of Latinos in the city. Also, East Harlem is home to many immigrants from Italy. The place of their compact residence received an unofficial nickname of Italian Harlem.

Prior to 1950, most of the residents of the eastern districts were natives from Puerto Rico. East Harlem is located next to the river Harlem on the north side, 116 Street and Fifth Avenue on the east side. As of the census of 2000, 117,743 people lived in East Harlem and parts of the Upper East Side. Over 25% of them are Puerto Ricans – it is their highest concentration of accommodation around New York. The vast majority of the apartments are rented. East Harlem began to be actively built up in 1880 and was originally inhabited by immigrants from Germany. Later, immigrants from Ireland and Italy, and Jewish immigrants began to settle here. After the First World War and still East Harlem is heavily populated by Hispanics.

Once the area of Harlem was populated by Dutch farmers, and until the beginning of the 19th century Dutch cattle was grazing here, and Dutch cheesemakers were making cheese. Over time, the earth gave all its juices, Dutch farmers left, and apartment buildings grew in the place of pasture, where owners were not in a hurry to settle – the area was still in the suburbs. Soon, housing prices fell in Harlem, and the houses found their owners – blacks not only from other parts of New York, but also from the southern territories of America, and the Caribbean islands.

In 1960 and 1970, the area was considered one of the most criminal in the city. International conflicts and fights often happened here. Houses were overcrowded, and many were in poor condition. A gang called Young Lords managed the district, which collaborated with the black panthers. East Harlem had many charitable programs, such as free breakfasts for hungry children and free medical care for poor families. Today, a gang Latin Kings operates in the area. The area is still full of social problems, but their scale is smaller than before. Thus, by 1990 the level of poverty and crime has decreased by 70% compared to 1960. Two police stations constructed here played a significant role in this, as well as the legalization of abortions in the US. The area is also a popular location for TV shows.

East Harlem slowly is getting used to the tourists. Graffiti, museums, a strong influence of Spanish culture, and metro stations that are very conveniently located cannot be passed. However, after the sun goes down it still may be unsafe in the area.
