The Best Introduction Ionizing Radiation

If you’re interested in the subject of ionizing radiation, the first thing that you need to understand is that it starts at the electromagnetic spectrum, its ultra-violet level. Basically, this kind of spectrum is all about a range of energy forms which are transmitted in different waves, including x-rays, UVA, cosmic rays, UVB, and so on. Another important detail that should be mentioned is that this type of radiation has shorter and high energy wavelengths compared to the other side of this electromagnetic spectrum that includes longer wavelengths, lower energy, and is called nonionizing radiation.

It’s true that high energy and short wavelengths mean that they are potentially harmful. This means that ionizing radiation is responsible for causing a number of dangerous diseases, including cancer. The main reason why these high energy and short wavelengths are so damaging is their ability to disrupt multiple biological molecules in all living cells. Keep in mind that the damage is resulted in the transformation of these molecules into different harmful molecular forms after affecting atom electrons and changing them into positively-charged ions. This type if biological transformation is somatic damage and it affects only those people who receive this type of radiation.

Another major damage caused by it is genetic, and this is when those molecules that are inherited become disorganized, thus causing a lot of damage to further generations. This is what also explains a certain distinction between both genetic and somatic damages. Pay attention to gamma rays because they represent the most energetic form of the electromagnetic radiation. When people use it properly, it serves a number of beneficial purposes for those patients who are diagnosed with cancer.

Nowadays, a special radiation therapy is advised in certain cancer cases, including the ones where tumors are inoperable. That’s because gamma rays are fast absorbed by malignant tissues that die. Another great benefit is that they can detect many cardiovascular and brain abnormalities while being invisible to our eyes, but still remaining the strongest form of light. In summary, you should know that radiation is the energy that comes from a given source and travels via materials and spaces. Its ionizing type is produced by some unstable atoms that have their excess of mass and energy, unlike stable atoms.
