Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own

In 1910s-1920s of the 20th century, essays in some cases became an art form that existed at the intersection of literature and journalism. This feature is quite noticeable in Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own, which raised the topic of women and literature.

According to Woolf, every woman, if she wants to write must have the material means and her own room, where she could do creative work without interference and bothersome households and guests.

Essay A Room of One’s Own can be considered as a fictional story, with all its elements: the narrator, social and spatial-temporal parameters, characters, situations, portraits and landscapes. Typically, in an epic work the reader is given the time and place of action and actors called characters. A narrator can be a character as well.

The action in the essay starts on one October day. The narrator sits by the river thinking on her theme: what women she should write about first of all – Fanny Burney, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell? Then, exposure is filled with the first and the simplest feature of the landscape; the place of events is indicated.

It is known that the artist is able not only to observe and summarize, but also create a new world. According to Woolf, artists create a scattered and unpredictable reality. Following the terms of artistic reality, the writer tore her eyes away from the surface of the river, has risen rapidly and walked across the lawn, but she was stopped by a university supervisor. The lawns in Oxbridge had been groomed for 300 years, and only members of the University Council were allowed to walk on lawns, the rest was offered to walk along the gravel paths.

Fishing of the thought, in which the narrator remained, was roughly stopped. She was not given a chance to visit the famous library. But the look at the old chapel with its domes and towers consecrated at night, towering over the hills like sailboats, was enough for her. All this inspired a high aesthetic sense of beauty.

The creative mind of the narrator takes her back in time in the history of Oxbridge, when a swamp, overgrown with grass, was in place of monolithic buildings and the chapel. Narrator (Mary Beaton) conveys the very dynamics of the construction of the oldest university.

Considering the position of women in literature, Woolf in the tradition of her famous father Leslie Stephen did not overlook the impact of social conditions on the position of women writers. The action moved into the modern cinematic speed. The story of Virginia Woolf is similar to the change of personnel in the cinema. The reader is in front of the moving scene of reality, moving along with it.
