Citizen Kane By Orson Wells

The first position of the one hundred version of the book of John Kobal "The top 100 movies", one of the ten greatest films in the history of cinema, repeatedly awarded and presented in 9 categories for Oscar, one of which "Best original screenplay" has received this award. It's all about the film “Citizen Kane” by the director Orson Wells, filmed in 1941.

Before moving on to the plot, we should mention a few innovative elements of Wells used while making the movie. The film begins with a synopsis, presented as a newsreel, of the main character’s central life events. Thus, at the very beginning, the main stages are outlined, which will further develop the intrigue. Another distinguishing feature is repeated flashbacks, giving the movie the structure of the detective. Although Orson is not the first to use flashbacks, the film is one of the best examples of this technique. The third innovation is the repetition of the same past events from different points of view. Besides, the movie has an unusual intra framing and opens up the multiplicity of meanings uttered in the frame replicas.

The movie is about the life of a winner, a leader, a favourite of millions, and at the same time a man hated by numerous people. Charles Foster Kane is a newspaper magnate, the richest man, the politician, whose campaign speech is full of sarcasm and self-righteousness. His road to power has nothing but sweeping self-promotion, endless promises, slander and headhunting the opponents. The superiority of Kane is primarily emphasised with the view point selected. The lens is directed upward and wide angle lenses give a feeling of "overhanging" ceiling, causing the hero bump up against it. Wells shows that Kane always seems to lack the space in the framework of his lifecycle. With the death of Kane at the very first shots of the movie, the lights in his room go out, clearly denoting the end of life. His last phrase is a single word: "rosebud". From that moment on the journalists while preparing a story about him, are trying to shed light on his life story, and guess the meaning of Kane’s last word.

The theme of the movie is nostalgia for childhood as the lost Paradise, which symbolises the password "rosebud". The viewer will unravel this metaphor when seeing a wooden house and a little boy Charlie sledging, still not aware of what he will become....

In the history of cinema, Wells is a vivid symbol of the director’s amateur cinema. In "Citizen Kane" he's the leading actor, producer, screenwriter and film director which is an unheard luxury for America of 30-ies, as there were no producers and that sort of experimentation freedom.
