Descartes Proof of God’s Existence

According to Descartes, there are differences in philosophy on any issue. The only truly reliable method is a mathematical deduction. Therefore, Descartes considers mathematics as a scientific ideal. This ideal has become a determining factor in the Cartesian philosophy.

Is there anything we can be sure of? Descartes says yes. Even if we doubt everything, we cannot doubt that we doubt that is the fact that we have consciousness and being. We, therefore, have an absolutely true statement I think, therefore I am (cogito ergo sum).

The person formulating the statement cogito ergo sum expresses knowledge in which he or she cannot doubt. It is a reflexive knowledge, which cannot be refuted. Anyone who doubts cannot as a doubtful person doubt (or deny) that he or she doubts, and therefore, he or she exists.

Of course, this statement is not enough to build an entire deductive system. Additional proofs of Descartes are associated with his proof of the existence of God. From the concept of perfect, he infers the existence of a perfect being, God.

Perfect God does not deceive people. This gives us confidence in the method: everything that seems to us to be self-evident as the assertion of cogito ergo sum, should be a valid knowledge. This is the source of the Cartesian rationalist theory of knowledge: the criterion of the truth of knowledge is not empirical support (as in empiricism), but the ideas that appear clear and distinct to our minds.

Descartes argues that for him just as self-evident as his own existence and the existence of consciousness, is the existence of a thinking being (soul) and extended life (matter). Descartes introduces the doctrine of the thinking being (soul) and extended being (matter) as the only existing (other than God) two fundamentally different phenomena. The soul is only the thinking being, but not the extended one. Matter is only extended thing, but not the thinking one. Matter is understood using only mechanics (mechanical-materialistic view of the world), while the soul is free and rational.

Descartes stated that the human spirit has the immediate certainty of its existence in itself, which is what makes the spirit. God is the principle of reliability only for that what is different from the spirit to the world of sense, but not for self-assurance of spirit. God is the principle of accuracy validation, its objective authorization, confirming that what is clearly and distinct for the spirit, and therefore reliable, is in fact true. Turning to God is necessary for the transition from subjective to objective reliability.
