The Three Tales of Cymbeline

During the time of Augustus Caesar, a glorious emperor of Rome, reigned in England. The name of that king was Cymbeline.

The first wife of Cymbeline died when his three kids were young. The eldest of these kids, Imogen, was raised in her dad’s court. By a strange chance the two sons of the king were stolen out of their nursery, when the eldest was three years old and the youngest was an infant. The king was unable to find the kidnapper to his great regret.

Cymbeline had two marriages. His second wife was a plotting, wicked woman, and also a cruel stepmother to Cymbeline's daughter by his first wife, Imogen.

Though she hated Imogen, the queen wanted her to marry a son of hers by a former husband. Exactly for this purpose she hoped upon Cymbeline’s death just to place the crown of England upon the head of her son Cloten. She was already aware of the fact that if Cymbeline’s sons weren’t found, the princess Imogen should become the king's heir. However, this plan was prevented by Imogen herself. So she dared to marry without the consent, not to mention knowledge of her father or her wife.

Posthumus (Imogen's husband) appeared to be the best scholar and perhaps most accomplished gentleman of that age. Hid dad passed away fighting in the wars for Cymbeline. Soon after his birth his mom died too for grief at the loss of her husband.

Cymbeline, being sorry for the helpless state of this orphan, decided to take Posthumus and have him educated in his own court.

Imogen as well as Posthumus were both taught by the same tutors. Moreover, from their infancy they were true playfellows. These kids loved each very much and their affection kept increasing with their years. It’s no wonder they privately married having grown up.

Soon, the disappointed queen learnt this secret, for she had to keep spies all the time, watching upon the actions of her daughter-in-law. Without delay she told the king about the marriage of Imogen with Posthumus.

Cymbeline caught anger, when he found out that his daughter had been forgetful of her high dignity, so made up her mind to marry a subject. He ordered Posthumus to leave England and had him banished from his native country for ever.

The queen, pretending to pity Imogen for the hardship she suffered at losing her husband, suggested to have them procured during a private meeting before Posthumus set off for his journey to Rome. Imogen provided her husband with a diamond ring and in turn Posthumus promised her not to part with the gift.
