The Problem with Evil

In philosophy of religion, the problem of evil is the question of the simultaneous existence of evil and god, which is absolutely or relatively all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good. In favor of evil there are arguments indicating that the simultaneous coexistence of evil and such a deity is unlikely or not possible at all. Attempts to prove the contrary are presented by the theodicy.

A wide range of issues related to the problem of evil is dealt with in theology. This problem is also studied in other areas of philosophy such as secular ethics, as well as in some scientific disciplines, such as evolutionary ethics. However, usually the problem of evil is seen in a theological context.

For the first time the problem of evil was studied by the Greek philosopher Epicurus, using the following argument: if the omnipotent, omniscient and all-good God exists, then evil does not; the world is evil; therefore, the all-powerful, all-knowing and all-good God doesn’t exist.

This argument uses the method of contradiction. This argument is logically true if the premises are true, hence the conclusion is true. The modern interpretation is the following: God exists; God is omnipotent, omniscient, and all-good; all-good wants to destroy evil; omniscient knows where evil comes from and how it can be destroyed; the Almighty is able to resist evil; God knows all the causes of the evil, able to prevent the appearance of evil and wants to destroy it; if the omnipotent, omniscient, and all-good God really exists, the existence of evil is impossible; but evil exists (logical contradiction).

These proofs show two variants of the logical contradiction of the existence of evil. They show that the adopted judgments lead to a logical contradiction, and therefore cannot be simultaneously correct. The philosophical debates focus on the judgments, claiming that God and evil cannot exist simultaneously, and that God would destroy evil. On the other hand, advocates of theism (Leibniz) state the opposite: God can coexist together with evil and use evil for good.

Solution to the problem of evil is sometimes classified on and theodicy. Usually, the justification of the problem of evil boils down to an attempt to prove that there is no evil: evil is just a distorted or misunderstood good. In other words, evil is a temporary lack of good.

Theodicy tries to provide possible justification and thus refutes the obvious evidence of harm from evil, putting on the philosophical and moral reason of its existence. Some authors argue that the existence of demons or the fall of a man is indeed possible, but not probable and able to act as a justification, but not theodicy.
