Willy Loman a Tragic Hero

Death of a Salesman is a play by American writer Arthur Miller, written in 1949. The plot tells the story of unlucky salesman Willy Loman, who receives a modest salary and, like other American inhabitants, all life has to pay a lot of credit.

Throughout his life Willy seeks to get rich. He has two gods – the success and the family and when not achieving success himself, he puts his hopes on his sons, especially the eldest, Biff, who is endowed with abundant charm, thus providing him the role of a universal favorite. However, the life of Biff went the other way. He cannot and does not want to justify the hopes of his father, so that Willy finally conceives and implements a car accident in order to get insurance as a start-up capital for his son.

Willy Loman is a tragic hero. Tragic hero is the main protagonist of the tragedy. Death of a Salesman is a tragedy. In the essay The Tragedy and the Common Man, Miller offers his own theory of the genre of tragedy. He says that the hero is an ordinary man whose tragic fault lies in the representations belonging to him; the basis of emotional response is compassion and fear for the hero who enters the fray of the world for the sake of self-esteem; optimism of the tragedy and the possibility of a tragic victory).

Willy’s blindness is the cause of his tragedy, a tragedy of his family, his eldest son, who by virtue of his natural charm was given by Willy an unbearable burden of unrealistic expectations.

In fact Willy forgave his son everything and even encouraged him for petty theft, neglect of studies, considering all these insignificant things compared to his natural charm. As a result there was a failure of the math exam, which casts doubt on the rest of his life. Biff turns into a loser, a tramp. Willy, on the one hand, is madly in love with his son, and on the other hand cannot forgive him unfulfilled expectations. This gap can be overcome only by some extreme exertion, sacrifice price. Such sacrifice is made by Willy, arranging a car accident in order to get insurance for Biff.

However, tragedy could have been optional. Biff could retake the exam, and continue to be puffed up with more or less success to the end of life, if not the fatal accident. Biff refuses to retake the exam, when after arriving to his father, he finds him with a woman. His faith in his father gets ruined. Shaken, Biff refuses to go through the exam. He can’t find his path in life. Life becomes not the goal of movement, but simply to flee from his father.

Not really across legal concepts, needed rewriting but a start for me to go from. Did not read the instructions and if read would have been fine.
