The History of Capital Punishment

The death penalty is one of the oldest types of punishment. First it emerged during the implementation of the law of talion: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. According to this principle, fair punishment for causing the death to another person is the death penalty. Nowadays, the majority of the countries abolished the capital punishment, but some countries left this punishment in their legislation in the form of hanging (Iran, Iraq Japan, Palestinian National Authority, Washington state in the USA), shooting( China Vietnam, Belarus), lethal injection (United States, Guatemala, Thailand), electrocution and a gas inhalation, a decapitation (Saudi Arabia).

The first capital punishment law was written in 16th Century BC in ancient Egypt, when the person was convicted to the death penalty for the magic. And from this time people used different ways to kill themselves. For example, in Rome Empire there were two types of DP; for free residents were used the decapitation and the crucifix was used for the slaves. Roman Emperor Caligula ordered to feed the animals with the human flesh after the Gladiator’s performance. It was caused by the increasing prices for meat. Therefore, the animals were fed by the criminals. In the middle years Capital Punishment was used by Church. More people were accused for witchcraft and heresy. Catholic Church created the inquisition for investigation. The bloodiest Inquisitions were in Spain, which killed about 30.000 people. Humans died from different punishment - death by burning, drowning and etcetera. In Renaissance, Guillotine was widely used for the capital punishment, it was the Noble death. This punishment was used until the 19th century; in the 20thcentury, when the firearms had a bigger spread, a new way of the punishment, the shooting, appeared. The convicted was placed on the wall and the executors did the sentence of the court. Usually, there are many executors and each of them has a gun. Only one person has the live ammunition, but he doesn`t know this.

To make the capital punishment with less suffering, the government started using of the lethal injection. But it is very delicate action, the executor should enter an exact amount of a substance. If he enters more or less, a victim will suffer. Now there are many human rights organizations, which consider that the capital punishment is the worst manifestation of the human rights violations. The absence of the death penalty is necessary to become a member of the state of the Council of Europe.

The death penalty is one of the oldest types of punishment. First it emerged during the implementation of the law of talion: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. According to this principle, fair punishment for causing the death to another person is the death penalty.
