One of the characteristics of the evolution of modern social world is the development of mass societies. The successful development of technology (in communications, manufacturing, and transportation) has transformed the organization of group life. Today, many interactions occur on a large scale, bringing together thousands of people. Requirements of the efficient production transform more and more enterprises to large corporate associations. The development of the industry leads to a further concentration of population in urban areas. Democracy and pluralism has become a feature of modern mass society.
On the other hand, the modern mass society opens up unprecedented opportunities for manipulation and abuse. This is due to the fact that millions of people are involved in mental life characters, which they meet due to the media communication, and react on them in much the same way as if reacting to real people. And although the law of evolution of the modern world undergoes significant changes, human nature, apparently, does not change. People are still being raised in the primary groups, they have the same feelings, and they control themselves as they have always done. In other words, the human spirit has itself hardly changed.
The concept of mass is a key doctrine of mass society. Sociologists characterize such a society, where the social psychology of the masses dominates, mass production and consumption dominates, mass communication and mass culture, eventually forming a mass value. Mass society includes civil society and all its institutions based on public opinion. In fact, modern Western civilization came to mass society. Today, the main contradiction of Western civilization is a contradiction between mass and civil society, the main attributes of which are freedom, democracy, and equality.
The concept of mass is rather diverse. But as a rule, it defines the set of middle-level people, each of whom feels like the other one. These people form the basis of a mass society. In sociology, there are different concepts of mass society: elite, antitotalitarian, liberal, democratic. It is within the democratic concept the contradictions between civil and mass society are being resolved. This occurs through the use of the mass communication technologies in social and political life.
If the mass is the vast majority of average people, what is common between them? These are shared values, needs, and desires for a particular psychological state. This makes the mass a bastion of stability of society and ensures its progress. Therefore, the ruling elite always fight for the mass and its values.
