History of Abortion

The practice of abortion was widespread as far back in ancient times. Residents of Australia in ancient times in order to cause miscarriage, used to destroy the fetal integument. Thus, surgical abortion appeared many centuries ago and is not a modern invention. Hippocrates was a vocal opponent of abortion. He argued that the medical art was aimed at the preservation of the works of nature and not their destruction.

Some doctors at the time allowed terminating the pregnancy only in those cases where childbirth threatened the health and life of the mother and baby. In those cases when abortion was needed to hide infidelity, the doctors basically refused. However, it is possible to explain the permit for abortions only in case of the threat to life that gynaecology as a science at that time was not well-developed, and many women in they died. Plato did not consider abortion as an impermissible procedure, and Aristotle even recommended it as a way to limit high birth rate. The law of the ancient Romans punished the artificial abortion. However, it applied only to married women but about 200 BC the abortion was punished everywhere with exile and hard labour in the mines.

Thus, the practice of abortion, as well as punishment for it, was featured from the ancient times. It should be noted that each country had different regulations of interruption of pregnancy, for example, in the United States abortions were allowed until 1860. The law that completely banned the abortion was preserved until the 60-ies of the 20th century. In 1973 the fighters for women's rights successfully insisted law that allowed women to have an abortion up to the seventh month of pregnancy, regardless of the reasons that led to this decision. In the second half of the nineteenth century nationwide movement occurs appealing to the prohibition of abortion in the U.S. As a result, since 1989, the administration of all States has received the right to set some limits on their conduct.

In modern civilized countries, abortion is considered in the context of human rights. The compatibility of the legalization of abortion with the recognition and protection of the human right to life is considered by the constitutional courts of West European countries and the European Commission on human rights.
