The 21st Century School Librarian

Library has a special place in the culture system. On the one hand, it is an object of memorization capable to save and organize the knowledge of previous generations, and on the other hand, library is an active subject of promotion of culture, which requires a special cultural change management strategy.

As a socio-cultural institution, library has been created to perform the following actions: collection, processing, storage, providing written and printed works to readers in temporary use. In addition to actual library functions, library performs a social function, which is historically conditioned.

At the end of the 20th century, library entered a new difficult period of development associated with innovative socio-economic, cultural and technological changes in society and with the internal dynamic processes in the organization of the library. Today, the communicative function of libraries becomes perspective, implying different formats of dialogue with readers. But the preponderance of oral communication at the expense of working with the library collections can lead to the transformation of the library into the clubs.

Adapting to the preferences of mass culture, libraries try to be modern in today’s world, open to potential users, and attract the attention with any cultural ways. It is important to maintain the measure and not to lose the essence of the library in this process. It is necessary to transform the traditional image of libraries and librarians in the public consciousness with the help of competent formation of the image of the institution and the profession.

Cultural policy of the state, national programs in support of the promotion of reading, change of higher education paradigm, the focus on the professional competence of librarians indicate that the profession of a librarian is perspective and in demand, but we need a librarian of the new formation. The 21stcentury school librarian should be a creative navigator and intermediary in the system of documentary communications with knowledge and skills in management and marketing in the field of library and information activity. Modern librarian should be versed in a lot of knowledge (psychology, sociology, political science, law, education, and others).

Librarians need to constantly develop modern humanitarian knowledge, taking into account the dynamics of the market economy and innovative processes in the field of culture. Strengthening of vocational education, provision of training through various forms of requalification are important components of library activities. Librarian, first of all, is required to be information and media literate.
