The Allegory of the Cave

If you are fond of the Allegory of the Cave, you need to know that Plato used it to get across his important idea that when dealing with teaching, it’s not about the art of providing students with a gift of sight, as it’s about turning their eyes to the right path. Basically, there are 4 levels involved in the Allegory of the Cave by Plato. Keep in mind that they are best described as certain realities based on sounds and sights, those scientific truths that can be discovered within the cave, those wonders that exist beyond it, and men carrying artifacts.

Its first level is a visible reality. For example, those prisoners who remain strapped only in one position are incapacitated in a way that the only thing that they can do is watching stone walls cast in all kinds of mysterious shadows. This means that they have no idea of what they witness. Prisoners may talk about how shadows are different because they are attracted by their consistent movements and motions. Some of them may example the flaws of stone walls, while others may pay attention to other details.

When it comes to the second level, remember that this allegory consists of those objects that are the sources of these shadows. The latter ones are brought upon stone walls by fires that lay on a completely opposite side of prisoners. They are connected with those performers who need to carry only one original puppet while walking. According to the shape of this cave, echoes resulted by traveling performers are created by shadows on walls. That’s why prisoners make their conclusion that these shadows create sounds.

The third part of this famous allegory written by Plato consists of certain scientific truths. There are other interesting details that should be research about the fourth one, but the main thing that you need to understand that this allegory is just the image of ignorant humanity. The main reason is that the cave is used as a symbol of ignorance that chains the entire mankind. All people are born into a state of inexperience, just like prisoners who have no idea of their perspectives.

Most people also feel secure while being chained to ignorance walls because their eyes are forced away from everything counterfactual. However, when they see the light, they don’t want to believe something that it real because they only want to come back to their comfort zone. It takes some time for most people to accept and discover something that is called the reality.
