The Works of Thomas Hardy are the tragic reflection of the Victorian era

Thomas Hardy is the writer of the end of the XIX century who deeply knew the rural England. In his works, he described the process of the impoverishment of small landowners, the destruction of villages, the collapse of customary connections and relationships — everything that was connected with the end of the prosperity of England in the era of Queen Victoria.

The early novels of Hardy, the first of which "the Poor man and the lady" and the second "Desperate remedies" were not of great interest among the readers and critics. However, after his rural novels «Under the green tree» and «Far from the Madding crowd» were published he became really famous.

Most of his novels and short stories he devoted to peasants, explaining his choice by the fact that the actions of the lower classes are a direct expression of their inner life, and therefore their nature can be plotted, in contrast to upper echelons of society the nature of which is not so easy to discern. Hardy hates modern society depicting the world in hopeless and bleak colours, thus, expressing the idea that the man is always at the mercy of circumstances and powerless before fate.

Describing the tragic fate of his characters, Hardy reveals the social basis of psychological conflicts and opposes ruinous moral standards of the Victorian era. However, addressing the contradictions of reality, Hardy sees no way to resolve them. Reality overwhelms the writer that determines the overall tragic tone of his works. Many of Hardy’s novels tell us about the torments and anxieties, ridicule and misery, which can spoil the strongest feelings known to man.

The man of Thomas Hardy is struggling with indifferent neither good nor evil forces. Being in conflict with the social environment, his personal desires and the will of third parties the man almost always loses the battle. Among the best collections of his short stories are "Wessex Tales" and "Life's Little Ironies" which are imbued with the same pessimism as his novels.

Hardy also wrote a three-act drama in verse "The Dynasts” about the era of the Napoleonic wars. The drama is interesting as an attempt to revive the epic, but intricate and cumbersome composition doomed this attempt to failure.

The strongest side of his works is the analysis of tragic conflicts and description of English life. Hardy raised many of the acutest social and psychological problems and created artistically expressive images of English nature. His works were distinguished by the frankness and boldness of psychological analysis and a pessimistic assessment of the morality of contemporary society.
