Ordinary Control Freaks in Judith Guest's Ordinary People

American literature is interesting to many people for different reasons. Basically, it deals with some struggle that should be overcome and many real-life situations that you can emphasize with. You should pay attention Ordinary People because it’s one of the most fascinating novels written by Judith Guest.

It tells readers a story of one ordinary family trying to cope with the loss of its member because of a boat accident. This novel is brilliantly written and includes 2 narrators, Conrad (the only son who is left) and Calvin (his father). The author decides to use them both to reveal a number of important thoughts and themes. In this well-known novel, Calvin does his best to cope with the loss of the other son Buck who died because of a boat accident and the attempt of Conrad to commit suicide. His personality keeps conflicting with his friends and wife because he wants to control and order everyone, but he doesn’t always do that.

The history of Calvin is eventful because he grew up in a foster house without any parents whom he saw only scarcely, and this is what played an important role in his desire to control everything. The fact that Calvin had to grow up in this place means that he had no opportunity to control his own life in the past. As an adult, he wants to get a lot of control, and its excellent example is a scene during a breakfast when he talks to Conrad about a psychiatrist who is recommended to him.

Don’t forget about his ambition to be a good father because it also identifies his need to control. Its roots are in his childhood because he never had any father. Besides, his entire career wasn’t planned by him totally, but it was an important decision. That’s why Calvin feels that he had no control over his life, but he wants to gain it. Besides, he had a few quite traumatic life experiences, including Buck’s death and Conrad’s suicide attempt, so that he wants to maintain the right order in his life. There are different examples of this attempt given by the author in the text directly.

For example, Calvin does his best to maintain the right order while talking to Beth in one great restaurant. They discuss a possibility to go away to London, but he opposes this idea because he wants to go in the winter. He provides many reasons to back up this argument, and the main one is that Calvin thinks that this decision may ruin the order of this life. It’s obvious that his personality was influenced by his past.
