Characterization of Emma

Jane Austen’s novel Emma is her largest work and the last book published during the life of the writer.

The main character of the novel, Emma Woodhouse, is a charming young girl, absorbed in cares about personal happiness of the people close to her. From the first pages of the novel we learn that her governess, Miss Taylor, got married thanks to her. After losing Taylor, with whom she was close, Emma seeks to compensate for the deficiency and soon meets Harriet Smith, a 17-year-old girl, an orphan whose origins shrouded with mystery. Emma really wants to help Harriet find personal happiness.

One of the few people who can see faults in Emma Woodhouse and the only one who dares to tell her about them is Mr. Knightley, a close family friend. His brother is married to Emma’s sister, Isabella, so he, as a member of the family spends a lot of time with Emma and her father. Taking advantage of this, Mr. Knightley loves to read her morale and give helpful advice, but Emma quickly turns his advice into a joke, even though deep down she always listens to him.

Mr. Knightley is not married and has a clear view of how Emma should behave herself. Emma’s friend, Harriet Smith, falls in love with Mr. Knightley and tells Emma that Knightley is apparently in love with her too. After Emma finds out about her Harriet’s love to her best friend, she suddenly realizes that she loves Knightley herself.

Compositionally, the novel is divided into three books. The first book consists of eighteen chapters, in which we meet the main characters. The events of the first book are focused around Emma’s arrangements of the happiness of her young confidante Harriet Smith.

The second book is also divided into eighteen chapters, in which events are scheduled in a detective style. New characters appear: Frank Churchill, a young man suitable for the hand and heart of Emma; Jane Fairfax, a pupil of colonel, a young lady, who independently earns money working as a governess. The romantic intrigue of the second part of the books is focused on Jane Fairfax, which finds its resolution only in the third part.

And finally, the third book consists of nineteen chapters. Here, Emma says goodbye to all her errors and finds happiness, together with other characters.

Characters of the novel live their lives without worrying about major problems. Their lives are filled with small vain things, but Austen skillfully reveals their inner world. In her novel, the life of characters is depicted genuinely, focused on specific problems of behavior and feelings in authentic and concrete society.
