Lady Macduff as a Foil for Lady Macbeth

Macbeth is the play, one of the most famous tragedies of William Shakespeare. The play is vaguely based on real stories of the Scottish king Macbeth. It is often represented as an archetypal story about the dangers of excessive lust for power and betrayal of friends.

The nature of the main character is sinister and oppressive, but not immediately. Shakespeare gradually showed his evolution under the influence of the forces of evil (in the beginning – the three witches, and later his wife Lady Macbeth). Noble by nature a hero goes astray, believing in witchcraft prophecy. Accepting the inevitable fate, the main character decided to commit a terrible crime (the murder of the king), and again gradually. At first, he hesitates and tries to back out, but Lady Macbeth as a born Eve, tempts him by power and persuades him to commit a crime. When Macbeth killed the king, he could not find the strength to put bloody daggers to servants. Then Lady Macbeth goes to the scene of the crime herself and smears the blood on servants to hide their own sins.

Lady Macbeth image reveals the ambition of a woman and her desire to become a queen. Shakespeare created a bright female character that combines traction to mischief and the inability to survive the crime committed. Lady Macbeth’s walks in her sleep, attempts to wash off the blood and talks aloud show her going crazy. The subsequent suicide of the Queen indicates a sharp rejection of human nature of the crime. Strong, brave, capable of any act for the sake of power Lady Macbeth at the end of the tragedy becomes weak, while her husband becomes stronger.

Lady Macduff is a foil Lady Macbeth in the tragedy. She is the wife of Lord Macduff, who runs from Scotland to England to join the enemies of Macbeth. She fears for them and their children: Macbeth has sent assassins to wipe out the entire family of a traitor. The appearance of the assassins interrupted the conversation of Lady Macduff and her little son, when she tried to jokingly hide the grief and the fear. Despite the fact that Lady Macduff appears only in one episode of the tragedy, her image is clearly and vividly depicted by Shakespeare creates a contrast with the image of Lady Macbeth. A loving mother, for whom the home is more important than all the political ambitions, represents nobility, which is totally devoid of Lady Macbeth, who, in her own words, is capable for the sake of possessing the power kill her own child. This juxtaposition of the characters is particularly evident if we consider that Lady Macduff and Lady Macbeth are the only female characters of the play (apart from witches and some court ladies).
