The Gaia Hypothesis

The Gaia Hypothesis is the theory, which is based on the hypothesis of the interaction of living matter with its environment. Our planet Earth has a mind connected with other living planets.

The author of biosphere Gaia theory, British environmentalist James Lovelock, claims that the Earth, striving for self-preservation, can destroy mankind, which has a negative impact on nature.

The Earth is an only organism, constantly growing and striving for self-preservation, actively responding to hurricanes, tsunamis, heat, frost and other climatic manifestations of the negative effects on nature by people. James Lovelock said that people were the purpose of Gaia and people were in a state of war with it. Humanity must take care of the Earth, or the Earth will kill it, sooner or later.

In September 1965, Lovelock has come to the conclusion that life on the Earth has learned to maintain the necessary conditions of existence for itself, entering with the planet in some form of mutually beneficial cooperation. The writer William Golding proposed to Lovelock to call a theory in honor of the Greek goddess of the Earth – Gaia hypothesis. The theory of Gaia, formulated by Lovelock, the mastermind of green, today is as relevant as never in connection with the global warming.

According to UN statistics, the number of accidents related to weather (weather anomalies – floods, droughts, typhoons, tornadoes), has tripled in the last quarter of a century. These data and the progressive warming made the British climatologist Lovelock change his pessimistic view of the future of the planet to the one that is even bleaker.

Professor James Lovelock stated in one of the magazines of Atmospheric Science Letters that climate processes on the planet have passed the so-called point of no return, after which the climate returns to the old, more equilibrium state. And the mankind, apparently, will not survive the era of global change.

According to the Gaia Hypothesis, the Earth is a very difficult organism, a superorganism. And this organism is constantly growing and evolving: energies are increasing on the planet, climate change, and so on. The process of evolution of the Earth is complex and irreversible.

In 2008, a group of scientists led by Professor Brent Christner at Louisiana State University found that bacteria may be responsible for the formation of almost all sediment, in particular, Pseudomonas syringae. It has been proven that bacteria can travel with clouds over long distances and cause precipitation around the world at sufficiently high temperatures. This discovery has become one more confirmation of the Gaia hypothesis.
