Discussing a Conflict in N. Ireland

This conflict is one of the most defining and contentious events of the 20th century so that its harsh impact is still felt nowadays. When studying a conflict in Northern Ireland, you need to pay attention to its causes or roots.

Basically, the origins of existing problems in this region are dated back to the 12th century, at the time of the Anglo-Normal intervention of Ireland. This is when England laid its roots in this region for the first time. Think about some intermingling of Irish and English populations, they are never united in full. As a result, we have 2 disparate populations with different interests who found themselves living on a small island together.

It’s obvious that these differences became more obvious at the times of Henry VIII because his break from Rome actually placed him at loggerheads and introduced Catholic Europe into Irish politics for the first time. Don’t forget about people’s resistance to the British Crown, which led a Catholic revolt against having the English King in Ireland, but it was out down and all people involved were executed.

Another interesting fact is connected with the reign of Elizabeth I who continued the legacy of her father in this region. A bid for independence was defeated by her army and everything ended up with a harsh settlement that impeded future uprisings. Plantations were established all over the country, but the lands that were occupied by Irish landowners were confiscated and distributed to colonists or planters who came from other British regions, such as England. This is what altered the demography of this region considerably because major protestant English communities were established. Besides, there were other deep roots responsible for a future conflict.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ireland saw its cultural renaissance because many groups sprung through it and they were targeted at preserving native language and pastimes. In 1905, the Irish Republican Brotherhood was revived, but not all inhabitants favored independence, so think about the opposition formed both outside and within Parliament. As this tension increased, private armies arose to represent each side’s interests. Finally, the Easter Rising of 1915 caught the British off guard, but the rebellion was crushed and its major figures rounded up. This means that England won this battle, but they needed to win the war because the brutal execution of important figures turned them into martyrs.

– the subsequent brutal execution of the key figures turned these men into martyrs and the cause gained further momentum. The Easter Rising was especially fortuitous for Sinn Fein, whose popularity surged. With the 1917 election of Eamon de Valera, one of the surviving leaders of the uprising, to the Presidency of Sinn Fein, all groups working towards an independent Ireland were unified under a single leadership.
