Oedipus and Creon

Oedipus the King is the most celebrated tragedy written by Sophocles. It is truly the crown of the tragic theater and one of the peaks of world drama.

In the tragedy, Sophocles directly confronts human free will with the will of the gods. Oedipus in the tragedy is executive, administrative, sincerely concerned about the situation of citizens and listens to their opinions. This is how Oedipus appears at the beginning of the tragedy. Priest in the head of the procession of citizens recalls how once Oedipus has already saved the city by defeating the Sphinx and expresses on behalf of the people a sense of love and faith to Oedipus. People hope to find support and recovery in Oedipus again.

Sophocles masterfully crafted events in the tragedy, alternating moments of easing action with more progressive strain. The main role in the action is given to troubles, coupled with scenes of recognition.

After the departure of Tiresias comes a new clash of characters. At this time, these are Oedipus and Creon. Their dialogue is a sample of the dramatic skills of Sophocles. Oedipus accuses Creon in collusion with Teiresias, by calling Oedipus the killer of Laius. Creon adequately acts with Oedipus, who after suspicions, have hastened to express a terrible accusation.

Despite the fact that the character is the carrier of a tragic guilt, his image is grand and monumental. The character was defeated in the struggle with fate, with the will of the gods. However, he does not look like a doll in their hands. Oedipus argues renewed his dignity with vigor in the final act of self-punishment. He punishes himself for involuntarily committed crime; he punishes himself severely and at the same time symbolically.

Creon is shown like a guy who can stands up for himself. He is honest, tempered, and even forthright. The best example of Creon’s reasonable character is the when he gets accused in the conspiracy by Oedipus. Instead of getting mad, he offers a rational explanation to Oedipus about why he doesn’t want to take his crown.

Creon already has all the power, as he is the brother of Oedipus wife. Everybody is trying to be nice with him in order to try and get to the king. If he had the crown, he would have the same power, but a lot more troubles. In this sense, his rationality stands out in contrast to Oedipus’s angry paranoia.

Creon’s argument is also backed up by the fact that he gave the crown to Oedipus. After the death of Laius, Creon was the king of Thebes. When the Sphinx tormented the city he said that anyone who would solve the issue would get his crown. Oedipus was the one who solved the issue and became a king.
