Arthur Miller's Depiction of the Salem Witch Trials

Arthur Asher Miller is the famous American writer. The future playwright was born in Harlem, New York in 1915. During the 1940s, and 1960s he had the most popular periods in his career. In this time, he got the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which is one of the most important prizes for music and drama. He met Marilyn Monroe (one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s) due to his popularity and then he left his wife and married her. In addition, he had some conflict with the government of the USA. He wrote the Crucible where he criticized the policy of the government. After that, he had published his drama, and he was involved to the Hollywood blacklist, which banned the literature actions. Although in the same year, Miller got Tony Award; the drama became more popular.

This book is about the Salem witch trials, which happened between February 1692 and May 1693. The action took place in the Salam in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. As a result, the nineteen young people were convicted to death by the hanging, because they were suspected of the witchcraft. Unfortunately, in New England, the puritan church had a big influence on the society and the people considered all unjust actions to be the acts of the devil. When the young girls were found in the forest they were dancing half naked. Of course, the girl wanted to avoid the punishment and they told that the women who live in the Salem pushed them with the witchcraft. But this is not all: one of them says that the pastor's slave is under the devil will. As a result, the mass hysteria starts in the city. The friends and the relatives accuse each other in the witchcraft; even the dogs are convicted.

Arthur miller conducts the parallels of the events in the 17th century with the events in the 20th century (namely the action of the house Un-American Activities Committee, when the American government bans the artists suspected of the sympathy to communism). Miller urges that the people should think, and don't believe someone's words; all of us have the individual mind and must analyze all information by ourselves.
