American Gun Control Controversies

For many Americans, the most important part of the U.S. Constitution is the Bill of Rights. These ten amendments were adopted to protect the citizens of the country from tyranny. Like the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech and religion, the Second Amendment that proclaims the right to bear arms is often at the center of heated debates.

However, after many massacres in the U.S. that happen lately, killing many people, calls for strengthening gun control is almost inaudible. Many researchers believe that the reason for this is the role weapons played in the U.S. history.

When in 1791, the U.S. forefathers supplemented the Constitution with the Bill of Rights they wanted to protect people from potentially dangerous governments of the federal center and the states.

Most scientists believe that the Constitution would not be ratified if the Americans were not assured that 10 specific amendments would be added to it which would inhibit the government’s authority and serve as a guarantee of individual freedoms.

In the first years of existence of the United States, many Americans feared the tyranny that could come from the army, so they wanted to put the military under civilian control, allowing citizens to keep weapons.

Those Americans, who advocate for the rights of citizens to own weapons, rest on the part of the Second Amendment, which states that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. For its part, the people who want to reduce the number of victims of incidents with weapons give special meaning to the phrase about a well-regulated militia.

David Hardy, a specialist in constitutional law and a lawyer from Arizona, said that the creators of the Constitution, when formulating the Second Amendment, meant both the right of individual citizens and civic militia.

Gun ownership in America has a long history. Cowboys and settlers used it to master the Wild West. But when the very concept of the Wild West disappeared and the national defense system was created, a bond of citizen-soldier vanished.

Perhaps, modern society does not need any armed citizens, or people’s militia. However, there is no doubt that the forefathers that found the nation included both of these ideas in the Constitution, because they wanted to be taken seriously.

Given the fact that the tradition of gun ownership has taken root in America, most analysts agree that the politics can hardly support additional control measures for weapons, especially in an election.
