15th Century European Imperialism

Imperialism is a policy of a state directed at support of unequal relations. In foreign policy, this is manifested in the conquest of territories, forming colonies, political or economic control over other countries. In domestic policy, a significant role is played by industrial and financial monopoly.

The end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century became in Europe a borderline of two eras – the Middle Ages and modern times. The 16th century brought to life of the European people fundamental changes in political, economic, religious and cultural spheres. This changed the nature of international relations.

In France, England, Spain, and Portugal, the power was increasingly concentrated in a single center – at the royal court. Therefore, these states are called centralized, based on a national basis, mainly in the form of absolute monarchy. Socio-economic content of the era of modern times was in the emergence of capitalism. The economic development of Western Europe is largely determined by the development of trade, as the commercial capital was invested in the development of the industry. New large shopping centers were allocated, whose influence spread to large areas. In France such centers were Paris and Lyon, in the UK – London, in the Netherlands – Antwerp and Amsterdam.

Thanks to the development of trade strong economic ties between Europe’s various regions were established, which further intensified the cooperation, bringing Europe closer to America, Asia and Africa. The search for gold and new trade routes has become an obsession for many Europeans. So there was a long-term external – political challenge of many states – colonial expansion.

Bases of colonialism and imperialism originated in the Age of Discovery and the first colonial conquests, namely, in the 15th century, when Vasco da Gama discovered the route to India and Columbus reached America. Portuguese were interested in coast of Africa, India, South America, where they have established a colony that later received the name of Brazil. From here gold, spices and other colonial products came to Europe.

Fernao Pires de Andrade visited Canton and opened trade relations with China, where in 1557 the Portuguese were permitted to occupy Macau in 1542. Then three Portuguese merchants discovered Japan.

However, the biggest part of South and Central America was subdued by Spaniards. During the reign of King Charles V of Habsburg, Spain was the most powerful state in Europe and the support of the Catholic Church in the fight against the Reformation.

Imperialism is a policy of a state directed at support of unequal relations.
