Anne Hutchinson's Biography

Anne Hutchinson was a midwife and New England religious leader who followed John Cotton to Bay Colony. Basically, this woman brought a lot of attention to the spirit-centered theology of Cotton via regular meetings and by championing him as a true Christian minister. This leader was cleared from charges of heresy, but Anne was punished with a banishment and excommunication. She ended her life by being killed during an Indian raid in NY.

Hutchinson is well-known for her major role in the antinomian controversy in Bay Colony. The main reason is that her participation in such public events was not unique, but it was very rare for women. Don’t forget that female activist in any religious life always gave a higher visibility, this preserving voices in important historical records. It’s true that the Puritan movement in the 17th century provided women with a broader scope for their leadership as visionaries, preachers, and petitioners.

Like many other contemporaries, Anne left no journals, correspondence, and published works. You can find only some documents about the antinomian controversy, trial records, and others that offer a primary source material for interpreting and learning her mental and inner world. Obviously, the close readings of such documents enabled many historians to get a better understanding of theological, political, gender, and other issues at the root of this famous colonial crisis.

There are different factors that contributed to the social authority of Hutchinson in Boston. She developed her good talents for domestic leadership and using herbal medicines. Besides, her father gave Anne the right theology education, and then she married to William Hutchinson. They travelled a lot to hear John Cotton’s charismatic preaching. She had 12 children with her husband.

Following the suppression of Cotton for Puritan views, he had to migrate to Bay Colony in Massachusetts. Anne convinced her husband to relocate there too, and this is where they got their gentry status and a prominent position in this colony. However, Cotton and Hutchinson found themselves at the center of a political and religious contest only 2 years later.

The effects of her regular meetings were divisive and she had many supporters, but they all were banished by the court, and Anne was excommunicated too. When her husband died, she moved with her small daughter to NY where she was killed only after 1 year.
