Use of Nature in The Big Sky

The Big Sky by A. B. Guthrie is an adventurous novel that tells about the times on the Western border. In the center of the novel is Boone Caudill who has domineering and mean father he hates. One day, Boone decides he wouldn’t bear his father’s hitting anymore, so knocks him out and runs away.

On the road Boone meets Jim Deakins, who follows him on a trip. They start their journey on the Missouri river into the Indian country hoping to become rich selling furs and hunting. Leading an outdoor life Boone starts to like it. He doesn’t want to become rich anymore, as he has everything he needs to survive.

Nature plays an important role in the novel as everything happen in the natural environment. The writer introduces beautiful landscape descriptions, filling the reader with a sense of absolute space. Nature seems so untouched by people in the novel.

A huge part of Guthrie’s novel is embraced by natural elements, the main purpose of which is to shape the plot and add certain characterization to the novel. These natural elements helped Boone find his freedom and achieve his matureness. Entering into the wilderness of the nature Boone was able to start a new life.

Boone doesn’t like his family life and doesn’t want his own family life to be like that. That is why he saw west as a new beginning towards freedom and life. The writer uses nature and natural settings of the west to describe Boone’s which for independence. Boone likes to be in the vast open land. He feels that it makes him free. He does not want to have any barriers around him that can hold him back. Boone says that the sky was bluer than in Kentucky and the sun was as bright as could it be. With these words he implies that here in the west there is no bustle in the sky, which resembles hi life. He feels that in the west like his life is clearer and not stressful. Being in the open spaces he starts to feel as free as a bird. This freedom brings him joy and makes him feel happy. Boone enjoys the independence and the freedom provided by the west.

Boone not only encounters more independence being in the nature, but he also faces the unknown things and various difficulties along his journey. His determination helps him a lot in fighting the hardships he meets with along his trip. He learns to deal with the natural surroundings and nature, when it suddenly comes across him. He describes the weather as a cold bully of a wind. The west for Boone is an unpredictable place; it can bring a lot of unexpected things, which means he must always be on alert.

Guthrie’s description of the west shows what a strong impact nature and its elements play in forming a journey.
