A Brief History of Latin America: Key Events in Historical Evolution

Latin America has always experienced turbulent events in its history. There were conquests, rebellions, massacres, each of them putting a mark in region's culture and influencing policy. Some of the events have affected historical evolution most so they literally make the brief history of the area.

In the 15th century, the Americas discovered by Spanish Columbus was already a belonging of Portugal according to papal bulls. After the traveler returns to Spain, both countries asked Pope Alexander VI to sort things out. Only in 1494, the Treaty of Tordesillas was ratified, which gave Portuguese Brazil territory and the rest of the New World was given to Spain. Soon after, Spain realized how valuable the territory may be after colonization and destroying the mighty Empire of the Aztecs. In 1519 Hernan Cortes and his conquistadors established new rules in Aztec and Inca Empires enslaving the natives and destroying a great part of their culture.

The next important events took place in XIX century when most of Latin America areas declared independence using the invasion of Napoleon in Spain in 1810. In 15 years Brazil, Mexico, and Central America were free from Spanish colonization. The following Mexican-American War in 1846 marked a series of battles between Mexico and United States which ended up with the Treaty of Guadalupe, most of the territory was given to the United States in exchange for $15 million. The War of the Triple Alliance and the War of the Pacific were two most devastating events ever happened on the territory of Latin America. In late 1864, Brazil and Argentina attacked Uruguay and Paraguay, leaving the last in ruins for decades. In 1884 the battles between Peru, Chile, and Bolivia gained Chile the coastal area, leaving Bolivians locked and Peruvians devastated.

The Panama Canal built in 1914 by Americans was one of the engineering miracles of that time. The canal has changed worldwide shipping and political environment in Latin America.

A big revolution between social classes started in 1911 in Mexico and ended with the rise of the rebellion political party which has saved their power in government until the end of XX century.

In 1953 Fidel Castro made first steps to the Cuban Revolution by attacking the Moncada barracks. The revolution had gown with the motto of ‘economic equality' creating tight connections with the Soviet Union and dealing the political crisis with the USA.

In 1975 the leading governments of South America cone – Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, and Uruguay have started Operation Condor to protect their power from opposition forces which have ruined the trust of people to the party.
