Victor Frankenstein’s Newest Creation

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is an epistolary Gothic novel by English writer Mary Shelley, one of the first examples of science fiction.

The book tells about the life and works of Victor Frankenstein, who managed to grasp the mystery of the origin of life and learn to animate lifeless matter. However, seeing that his creation turned ugly and monstrous, the scientist disowns him and leaves the city, where he lived and worked. Nameless being hated by people for its deformity soon begins to pursue its creator.

Modern Prometheus by Shelley, Frankenstein is a modern genius-titan, practically devoid of altruistic, philanthropic beginning. He was not a humanist, not a benefactor of mankind, not the sufferer, bringing a sacrifice for people, but, on the contrary, an ambitious creator, sacrificing family and friends for the sake of a great scientific discovery. Shelley’s character is fully immersed in science to reach the heights of knowledge. He furiously experiments and longs not exploit for the benefit of humanity, but for the world success. After the theoretical and practical training in the natural sciences at the University of Ingolstadt, Frankenstein starts laboratory scientific experiments.

Unlike titan Prometheus, likened to gods and men created, Frankenstein’s hard work achieves the first scientific results. First, he improves chemical equipment, then studies physics, chemistry, human anatomy, and physiology. To continue his studies he went to the cemetery crypts where secretly investigates human corpses. Inquisitive mind of Frankenstein tries to find out the answer to the question that has always been considered an enigma: where is the life’s start.

Frankenstein says that to find out the reasons of life, he has to turn first to the death. He understands that he is focused on the phenomena that are very abusive to human feelings, the processes that happen with the human body after death. However, this does not stop him.

Frankenstein is not afraid of the appearance of ghosts, because he doesn’t believe in superstitious stories. He absorbed only with his experiments. Finally, after many days and nights, Frankenstein manages to grasp the mystery of the origin of life. The first result of his scientific research becomes the discovery of a way of reviving the matter.

One of the stages of learning of the scientist-hero is the realization of the idea of the creation of living beings, like humans. By analogy with the mythological Prometheus Frankenstein seeks to accomplish the mission, intended only for God.
