Japan Must Be Put to Trial

Actions of the Japanese army in Southeast Asia during the period of 1931-1945 were accompanied by numerous crimes against humanity. The three of them that are well-known are the following: Massacre in Nanjing, Operation Sook Ching, and Manilla Massacre.

In 1937, war broke out between China and Japan. After the bloody and fierce fighting, Japanese troops entered Shanghai. After the capture of Shanghai, the capital Nanjing fell. On December 13, 1937 Japanese broke into Nanjing and massacred civilians. For about six weeks, the soldiers were burning and pillaging the city, and killing its inhabitants in most brutal ways. The number of affected civilians is estimated by the Chinese as 300,000 dead and more than 20,000 women were raped. After the war a number of Japanese military were convicted for the massacre in Nanjing.

The other massacre is known as Operation Sook Ching. After on February 15, 1942 the Japanese have decided to identify and eliminate the anti-Japanese elements of the Chinese community. This definition included the Chinese defense of the Malay Peninsula and Singapore, former employees of the British administration, and even ordinary citizens. The hit list also included people born in China. Those who, according to the Japanese, could pose a threat were taken in trucks outside the settlements and shot with a machine gun.

Soon the action was extended to the territory of the Malay Peninsula, where the Japanese authorities have decided not to carry out inquiries and simply destroyed all the Chinese population. The death toll is unknown. According to the British authorities in Singapore, it is about 100,000 dead people.

The third crime was Manila Massacre. At the beginning of February 1945, it became clear that it wouldn’t be possible to keep Manila under Japanese command. Army Headquarters were moved to the north, from where they started a destruction of Manila and its civilian population. The destruction plan was developed and approved in Tokyo.

The Japanese destroyed churches and schools, hospitals and homes, killing doctors, nurses, patients and even children. The slaughter and destruction was also occurring in the vicinity of Manila. In monasteries and Catholic schools, monks and nuns, students and teachers were killed.

According to the estimates, the number of those killed in the massacre in Manila is more than 100,000.

After the war, the Allies convicted approximately 5,600 Japanese military, accusing them of war crimes. More than 4,400 have been convicted, and 1,000 of them were sentenced to death.
