Family health medicine is widespread in Europe and is central to providing assistance to the population, as only a family doctor and a family health nurse are perfectly familiar with their patients and are able to pay attention to small changes in their health status. No other section of medicine is given much attention to examining the patient in relation to family members. The most important function of family health nursing is medical and preventive activities aimed at preserving the health of the family, elimination of serious diseases, the prevention of recurrence and the formation of a stable improvement of the long flowing diseases.
Each person has their own experience with a family nurse who is an expert of health care of primary level. Nurse’s mission is to define and improve physical, mental and social condition of the patient (individual, family or community).
In the work, the family nurse does not discriminate people based on race, gender, age, or religion, and social status. She is a consultant of the primary level, regardless of the patient’s health. Thus, the role of the family health nurse in the successful functioning of the health system is very important and has several aspects.
Family health nurse is a member of the team of health professionals. Each of the members has their own well-defined responsibilities, and together they work on the quality of care – decline in incidence, early detection of a disease. That is a work with a clear preventive orientation.
Family health nursing today plays a key role in the health and social care for older people, patients with chronic diseases, incurable and dying patients. A family health nurse must make their own decisions in the case of the provision of assistance to these populations. They also receive first-aid patients therefore they need to have the fullest possible information about family members, their chronic and hereditary diseases, risk factors, since a healthy lifestyle is based within the family.
