North American Transformation Between 1660 and 1750

The mastering of the Americas by Europeans began with the Age of Discovery. The first colonies in North America were established at the beginning of the 17th century by settlers from England, Holland and France. However, the most intensive colonization was carried out by England, replacing the Netherlands, and then France.

Equipping the settlement, the colonists at first maintained community orders – they were creating a common warehouse, products and tools were distributed centrally. Gradually, 13 colonies were formed on the Atlantic coast with a population 2.5 million people. The overwhelming majority of the colonists were engaged in agriculture. But by the end of the 18th century in North America according to the level and nature of economic development there were three regions: Northeast, South and Center.

Northeast was the most developed region. It was settled by mostly migrant members who emigrated from England for religious reasons. The main part of the economically active population was engaged in agriculture; the predominant form of organization of the economy was relatively small farms.

The Central region had colonies, where the farm agriculture was prevailing. Here there were large estates of the English aristocracy that were rented to the genetic rent in small plots.

In the southern colonies, the management of plantation-slave system developed.

With the development of capitalist relations in North America the number of wage-workers grew, formed mainly by immigrants from Europe. Qualified specialists prevailed among the workers. Therefore, in 1718 the Government of England had to impose restrictions on the emigration of workers of high professions, and in 1765 Parliament banned their departure. However this movement couldn’t be stopped, especially that the salaries were higher in the New World.

With time economic and political contradictions between the colonies and the mother country deepened.

The infringement of the interests of the local commercial bourgeoisie can be judged by the acts to regulate the colonial trade, the number of which in 1650-1761 exceeded 125. The law of 1650 introduced a ban for US merchants to trade with European countries. In 1660, the British colonial monopoly on such products as sugar, tobacco, cotton, indigo, etc. was introduced. British monopolized the import of many commodities.

Trying to stifle colonial industry and commerce, the British Parliament Act of 1699 banned the export of wool and its products from North America.
