The Faith That Substains Mary Rowlandson

When reading the narrative of Mary Rowlandson, you will understand that she expresses her personal feelings as a scared young woman who was taken captive by native Indians. However, she understands who to turn to during this awful act to get the necessary protection, strength, and comfort. It’s true that her tragic life experience brings her a number of unwanted hardships, but she is still able to overcome them all because of her Puritan beliefs.

Keep in mind that Mary Rowlandson practices her religious beliefs during this terrible accident and believes that God will help her. Basically, there are many interesting concepts, Puritan ideas, and cultures reflected within this narrative. You should understand that many Puritans believe that writing is an effective tool that must be used to help them glorify God. This means that the narrative of Mary Rowlandson is glorifying God. There are many Indians who do their best to discourage her faith, but she keeps depending on the word of God before others to escape this misery.

Besides, Puritans believe that they are chosen by God and that’s why God protects them all. When it comes to the story of Mary Rowlandson, it illustrated that her faith serves as God’s protection so that she keeps calling upon important scriptures from the Bible. During her unfortunate travel, she needs to cross a river, but she is not familiar with the dangers that she had to face. This is when Mary also relies on God’s word to protect her, and this is what allows her to cross the river without any harm.

Think about her physical strength because she can’t keep going any longer. In this moment of time, she decides to call out to God for more protection and strength while crossing a big swamp. Rowlandson indicates that she uses her religious beliefs and depends on God to remain safe. Her Puritan ideas teach her not only to ask God for protection, but also for her personal comfort.

The whole narrative is the first-person experience through the eyes of Mary Rowlandson, a young Puritan woman. This is how she tries to show a bias against native Indians due to her Puritan background too. Pay attention to both cultural and physical descriptions that she gives about them. Another important thing that you should understand is that she needs to change her lifestyle and adapt to survive and overcome a possible death. Luckily, Mary manages to achieve this goal in the end.

When reading the narrative of Mary Rowlandson, you will understand that she expresses her personal feelings as a scared young woman who was taken captive by native Indians. However, she understands who to turn to during this awful act to get the necessary protection, strength, and comfort.
